Tactics And Strategies You Should Use For Your Dissertation Defense

After spending months writing your dissertation the thought of actually having to submit to your defense is probably soul destroying. While many people are happy to studiously work their way through the process of researching and writing their paper, not many really like the thought of having to stand up in front of a panel of academics and justify themselves. It doesn’t seem fair, does it? Unfortunately, while this may feel like a right royal pain the derriere, it is a necessary evil, so seeing as you are going to have to bite the bullet and do it, then you might as well do it with a level of grace! Here are my tactics and strategies that you may wish to consider for your dissertation defense:

Positivity will get you a long way

Going in there all psyched up and with the right attitude will get you a very long way. You need to start believing in yourself. A positive attitude has been known to open many gateways in life, so you simply need to view this as the first hurdle that you need to overcome.

Dress to impress

No-one is suggesting that you should go out and buy a morning suit just for this occasion, however there is little to be gained from turning up in your scruffy jeans and stained T Shirt. Treat this as a job interview and ensure that you go in there looking your very best.

Get a good night’s sleep

I know that this might be easier said than done. However, you should at very least try and get a decent night’s sleep. Even if you do find yourself tossing and turning, being in your own bed and at least resting is infinitely better than spending the night before your defense out partying.

Be yourself

Don’t try and be something that you are not. Remember that the people sitting in a position of power right now, were once in your very own shoes. They want you to be authentic, they don’t want you to try and pass yourself off for something that you are not!

Answer the questions truthfully

Okay, so you are allowed to take a little creative license here, but don’t go overboard as telling blatant lies will only trip you up and dig a bigger hole for yourself. Answer as truthfully as you can, all the while ensuring that you put a positive angle on everything and you will be absolutely fine!
